CHICKEN SCRATCH

I (barb from bejeweled quilts) was so excited when I saw Val's post. I have a friend that has been wanting to teach me this Chicken Scratch for a while.

This is my semi completed project. This is going to be a pocket to an apron.

Mine does not look as good as Val's. I have to confess when I was a little girl, we were being taught hand stitching at church. Mine was horrible and to this day I have shied away from it. I have started a few projects and have been encouraged by some blogging friends. So...I will give myself and E for effort. Hopefully, the next time it will be better.

Val is right, this is so fun. She has a wonderful tutorial over at her bog.

Here are a few other names for Chicken Scratch
Snow Flake embroidery
Amish Embroidery
Depression Lace
Gingham Lace

Do check out her tutorial.....

Oh I LOVE it! I want to do a heart too. You did great! I am no good at hand sewing so I was surprised when I could do this. I am so excited that it inspired you to learn this art. I am working on another one now. I made the pattern up myself so we will see. I LOVE yours!!!!!!

It looks fabulous, Barb. We used to do it as children too. I have an apron from my grandmother that is all done in chicken scratch. It is gorgeous.

Boy does this bring back memories! My grandma taught me this while spending Christmas with her in Valintine Neb when I was about 10 years old. I wonder if my mom still has all of the items I sewed up that winter still in the linen closet?

So cute, it brings back fond memories of a late friend. She did beautiful chicken scratch but never could get the hang of quilting or piecing. It just goes to show you, we all have our talents. This looks good, Barb, keep it up!

I love it Barb. The heart is gorgeous....I think chicken scratch on the gingham always looks so fresh. I am always amazed at how women of bygone eras took simple things and made them beautiful and I'm glad we are not letting these lovely types of stitching disappear Thanks for sharing.
